Letter for Parents: Tour of Britain September 2024

Thu 29 Aug 2024
Dear Parents and Carers,

I hope this letter finds you well. As you will be aware from the local and national news, the annual cycling event, The Tour of Britain is passing through Barnsley on Thursday 5 September 2024. I am writing to provide you with important information regarding this event and the impact it will have on our school day.

The timings for the tour's passage through our areas are approximate and may vary depending on the speed of the race. According to the Spectator Information published by the Tour, it is expected to pass by Outwood Academy Shafton between 13:38 and 14:23. Please note that these times are subject to change.

At this time, the Council and local bus services have not yet published the exact timings for road closures in the surrounding areas. The only information indicates that there will be ‘rolling road closures’ during the event.

In consultation with Outwood Academy Carlton, where the Tour will also pass, we have made the decision to implement an early school closure on this day. This will ensure the safe and timely collection of students, unaffected bus pick-ups, and a smooth exit from our sites. Below is the school day schedule for Thursday 5 September:

  • Start of School Day: Periods 1-3 will proceed as normal from 08:20 to 12:00.
  • End of School Day: The school day will officially end at 12:00.
  • Lunch Option: Food will be available between 12:00 - 12:30 for students who wish to have lunch at school

All students will be off site by 12:30.

Where parents and carers would normally collect students from school, they should do so in line with the timings set out in this letter (12:00). We appreciate your cooperation to avoid any inconvenience or potential safety concerns.

We believe this plan will minimise and limit disruptions caused on the local highways by the Tour and ensure the safe and timely exit of all students. Should there be further information released regarding the timings of road closures, we will communicate this with you promptly.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Yours faithfully,

Alison McQueen
