Dear Parent/Carer
I am writing to address an important issue that has recently been brought to our attention concerning the use of electric scooters by some of our students. We have received several reports indicating that students are riding electric scooters to and from school, as well as bringing them onto site to store whilst in lessons. While we understand that these scooters can be a convenient mode of transportation, we have to let you know that we DO NOT allow electric scooters anywhere on our school site. The primary concern is the safety of our students, staff and the general public.
I would like to make you aware of the guidance regarding the use of e-scooters as a mode of transport to and from the academy. The health and safety of students in and around the academy is of paramount importance to us and we would, therefore, like to advise students not to travel by e-scooter to or from the academy. Under current legislation it is against the law to ride a privately-owned e-scooter in any public place. This includes roads, pavements, parks and town centres.
In reality, many of these types of vehicle will never be 'road legal' because their design fails to meet road-vehicle safety standards. Note also that it's an offence to use such vehicles on the pavement too. They cannot be used on academy premises. They can only legally be used on private land/property with the permission of the land/property owner. We would like to make you aware that from Monday 25th November 2024 we will not be allowing e-scooters to be stored within any area of the academy.
According to current law, electric scooters have specific regulations regarding their use. We urge all parents and carers to look at these regulations and discuss our concerns with their children. Our collective effort is essential in ensuring the safety and well-being of all our students and community members.
If a student continues to come onto the Academy site with an e-scooter we will make contact with home and ask that the e-scooter be removed to home.
Yours faithfully,
Alison McQueen
