Letter to Parents: Y7 - 10 Maths Welcome

Wed 04 Sep 2024
Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome back!  We hope you’ve had a wonderful break and are excited to dive into this new school year. Whether you’re in Year 7, 8, 9, or 10, we’re thrilled to have you back and ready to learn.

As you return to your studies, there are a few important things we want to remind you of to help you make the most of this year.

Firstly, maths homework is a vital part of your learning. It’s not just an extra task; it’s a chance to recap and recall what you’ve learned in class. Completing your homework regularly helps reinforce your understanding and prepares you for upcoming lessons. Remember, the more you practise, the more confident you’ll become in your skills. Maths uses building blocks, so all new content relies on a firm understanding of prior knowledge, and completing homework gives you a great way of ensuring that everything you’ve learned gets embedded in your long term memory. We will be starting off with homework on MathsWatch (you can use your normal school google login for this) but we will be switching to a different platform within the next month or so. Details about this swap will be sent out as soon as it’s ready to go.

Secondly, attendance is crucial to your success. Being present in class every day ensures that you don’t miss out on important lessons and activities that contribute to your overall understanding. Your attendance directly affects your outcomes, so make it a priority to be in school on time, every day. However, we understand that sometimes illness may prevent you from attending. If you do have to miss a day, please remember that work is set on Google Classroom for you to complete. We strongly recommend that you keep up with this work to avoid falling behind.

As you tackle more complex mathematical concepts this year, we recommend using a Casio fx-83 or fx-85 calculator. It’s the model we suggest for its reliability and consistency across all your maths classes. If you are able to purchase one for your child’s use, then it will help them get used to using these calculators. Most supermarkets will sell them, or they can be purchased online.

We are looking forward to seeing all the great things you’ll achieve this term. Let’s work together to make it a successful one!  If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s mathematical education, please don’t hesitate to contact me at e.chadbourne@shafton.outwood.com.

Yours faithfully

Ella Chadbourne
