Letter to Parents: Y11 Maths Welcome

Wed 04 Sep 2024
Dear Year 11 Parents and Students,

Welcome back!  We hope you’ve had a refreshing break and are ready to take on the challenges and opportunities of your final school year at Outwood Academy Shafton. This is an important time as you prepare for your GCSEs in the summer, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Provisional Maths exam dates this academic year:

  • Paper 1 (non-calculator) - Thursday 15th May 2025
  • Paper 2 (calculator) - Wednesday 4th June 2025
  • Paper 3 (calculator) - Wednesday 11th June 2025

As you embark on this crucial year, we want to remind you of a few key points that will help you achieve your best.

Firstly, homework is more important than ever. It’s not just an additional task; it’s an essential part of your preparation for the exams. Regular homework helps you recap and recall the material you’ve learned in class, ensuring that you’re fully prepared for your GCSEs. The more consistently you engage with your homework, the more confident and ready you’ll be when exam time comes.

Secondly, your attendance is critical. Being present in class every day is vital to your success, as it ensures you don’t miss out on important lessons, discussions, and practice that are key to your understanding and performance. Your attendance has a direct impact on your outcomes, so please make it a priority to be in school, on time, every day. We understand that sometimes illness may prevent you from attending. If you do have to miss a day, please remember that work is set on Google Classroom for you to complete. We strongly recommend that you keep up with this work to avoid falling behind.

In terms of resources, we recommend using a Casio fx-83 calculator for your studies. This is the model we suggest for its reliability and consistency in all your maths classes and can be found in most supermarkets, as well as purchased online. Buying your own calculator is recommended so it can be used at home as part of your preparation for exams and your independent study.

Additionally, we’re excited to announce that virtual maths lessons will begin after October half term for all pupils. These sessions will be a fantastic opportunity to reinforce your learning and ensure you’re fully prepared for your exams.

Lastly, we encourage you to attend the extra maths enrichment sessions every Monday from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. These sessions are designed to give you that extra boost in your understanding and help you excel in your exams.

We are looking forward to supporting you throughout this year and seeing all the amazing things you will achieve. Let’s work together to make this final year your best one yet!  If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s mathematical education, please don’t hesitate to contact me at e.chadbourne@shafton.outwood.com.

Yours faithfully
